Authors: Banleman, K.
Abstract: This study was conducted to assess the Utilization of Information and Communication
Technology Facilities for Research Output in Ghanaian Academic Libraries with a focus on
the University for Development Studies (UDS) Library systems. The UDS has four satellite
Campus libraries in the three northern regions which comprised the sample of the study. The
aim of the study was to inquire into the utilization of information and communication
technologies in academic library services in Ghana and its level of utilization for research
output by postgraduate students. The population of the study was two hundred and fourteen
(214) which comprised one hundred and fifty (150) post graduate students' respondents and
sixty-four (64) professional and paraprofessional librarians. The descriptive research design
was employed for the study with both qualitative and quantitative research strategies,
questionnaire, structured interview schedule and observation checklist were the data
collection tools used and administered to 150 respondents. Stratified sampling technique was
used in choosing the sample.
Relevant literature and statistics on the topic areas and secondary data were reviewed to
support primary data collected. Data were analyzed qualitatively in narratives and with
charts, graphs, tables, and matrices Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software
version 22, and Excel were used for the analysis. The findings revealed that, despite the
seeming availability of electronic information resources in the universities as well as their
benefits to university education, their effective utilization by students and faculty have been
hampered by several factors such as students making low level use of electronic information
resources in the library, some students not aware of the kinds of information and services that
are available, do not know the source of this information as well as cannot trace and retrieve
information through the use of these technologies due to being information illiterate and lack
the technical knowledge. Also, lack of skilled ICT personnel and that library staff need to
obtain continuous training on ICT to advance their skills so that they can easily impart the
skills and information they have attained to their users.

Title: RESOURCE SHARING AMONG PUBLIC UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN GHANA
Authors: Ibrahim, A. K.
Abstract: This study was carried out to examine the current resource sharing activities
among the six public university libraries in Ghana, with emphasis specifically, on the
resource sharing activities of the Balme Library of the University of Ghana, Legon
and the Library of the University for Development Studies, Tamale.
The researcher used techniques such as the administration of questionnaire and
interviews to collect data. The findings of the research include the absence of a formal
resource sharing agreement between the libraries under study, lack of institutional
policies on resource sharing and inadequate tools for the identification of information
materials for resource sharing. The study, therefore, recommended that the Balme Library and the Library of the University for Development Studies take steps to work out a resource sharing scheme which would make it possible for them to be part of a nationwide resource sharing scheme being developed by university libraries in Ghana.

Authors: Mohammed, H.
Abstract: The study investigated into marketing of library and information services/resources in
Sunyani, Kumasi and Tamale Technical universities in Ghana. Specifically, it dealt into areas
of importance which covers the objectives of the study such as; need for marketing of library
services, services/resources available in the selected libraries for marketing, techniques and
tools being used by the selected libraries in marketing, competencies and skills required of
information professionals in marketing of library services, measures for effective marketing
of library services and challenges faced by the selected libraries in marketing their services.
The 7p’s marketing mix theory was used. The study relied on both qualitative and
quantitative methods of data collection. Twenty (20) professional library staff were
interviewed with the use of a structured interview schedule, while two hundred and eighty four (284) students answered the questionnaire. Data collected from students was analyzed
with the use of SPSS, while data from professional library staff was recorded, transcribed and
interpreted. The findings revealed that respondents were fully aware of the benefits of the
marketing concept and therefore the need for marketing of library services was greatly
emphasized. The services/resources used by the selected libraries were found to be
inadequate and the few ones available were not properly marketed due to inability of these
libraries to properly use the right techniques and tools in marketing them. Inadequate
facilities, lack of funds, lack of staff and knowledge of staff in marketing and lack of
marketing policies were identified as major challenges faced by the selected libraries in
marketing their services. Some recommendations were however suggested and include;
advocate for more facilities and funds for marketing, increase collection of their libraries,
increase number of staff and skills in marketing and develop best marketing policies, tools
and techniques for effective marketing activities in their libraries.

Title: THE USE OF MOBILE TECHNOLOGIES FOR WEB 2.0 BASED SERVICE DELIVERY TO GRADUATE STUDENTS IN GHANAIAN UNIVERSITIES: THE CASE OF THE UNIVERSITY FOR DEVELOPMENT STUDIES (UDS), GHANA
Authors: Akeriwe, M. L.
Abstract: This study attempted to find out how mobile technologies could be used to implement Web 2.0
based service delivery to graduate students based in the Graduate School of the University for
Development Studies (UDS) Library. A 23 item questionnaire was administered to a sample of
155 participants who were selected by means of simple random sampling. A total of 119
questionnaires were retrieved and found to be adequate for analysis and interpretation. The
collected data was analyzed and interpreted using the SPSS package and Microsoft Excel and
was presented in the form of text and graphs. Findings indicated that graduate students overall
had very good abilities with regards to the usage of the Web 2.0 applications; that they will like
to access their library‟s resources through the Web 2.0 applications using their mobile devices
and the services they will like to access include reference services, circulation services,
searching the OPAC, accessing library news, e-resources and subject guides in that order.
There are varied kinds of mobile library services, examples of which are MOPACs, mobile
reference, mobile instruction, mobile collection and mobile tours. However, the UDS Library
does not provide any Web 2.0 mobile based services. The main challenges in implementing
these Web 2.0 mobile based services include cost of Internet access, slow Internet connectivity
and insufficient funds to acquire needed equipment. Based on these findings, some
recommendations were given.
